Ten minutes from Skippack, Pennypacker Mills was the home of former Pennsylvania governor Samuel Pennypacker.
It was turned into a museum depicting life in the 1900s.
The Colonial Revival mansion, located in Perkiomen Township just eight minutes from Skippack, is surrounded by 170 acres of farmland and was landscaped by Thomas Meehan and Sons.
Built in 1720, it became George Washington’s headquarters during the American Revolutionary War in 1777 and served as a field hospital for injured soldiers.
Governor Pennypacker made the mansion his summer home during his term in office from 1903-1907, eventually living there year-round until he died in 1916.
Today, Pennypacker Mills houses the governor’s extensive collection of antiques and manuscripts, including letters written by George Washington.
Free guided tours of the estate are available year-round, but reservations are encouraged.

It is one of Pennsylvania’s Century Farms and has operated under the same family for over 100 years.
