Danny Dietz Memorial honors Littleton native and United States Navy SEAL Danny “D.J.” Dietz, one of many servicemen killed in 2005 during an undercover operation against the Taliban.
Films like Lone Survivor, with Mark Wahlberg as the main character, were made in 2013 after reading the memoir of Dietz’s unit’s lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell.
The bronze monument by Canon City artist Robert Henderson represents Dietz in full battle gear and holding his M-4 weapon.
It depicts his stance in one of his last photos before his fateful mission.
The Dietz family had been informed of their son’s loss in the war for two years before the July Fourth, 2007 dedication.
