Or, you could try your luck by the Hadley intersection on Greenleaf.

The trail starts uphill, a definite leg and butt workout, and boy, does it make you huff and puff.

But keep going. There's something about reaching that water tower that feels like a small victory.

It's less than 4 miles round trip, but it's not a walk in the park, that's for sure.

I've seen first-timers struggle, so if you're new to hiking or trail running, you might want to practice on more accessible terrains before tackling Hellman.

And remember, leashed pets are welcome, but please clean up after them and keep our trails clean.

One last note: plan your visit because they close early, around 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.

The best times, in my opinion, are between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

Remember that the parking lot only has about eight spaces, so street parking is often a better choice.

A clean porta potty is available for use before you set out on your journey.

You wouldn't believe how refreshing it felt when I stepped onto Adventure Park's cool, shaded grass.

Amid the bustling city, it was like an oasis, a place to escape from the rigors of everyday life.

One of the great things about this park is the water splash pad that stays open till 8 in the evening.

It's the perfect spot to let the kids cool off on a hot summer day. It's next to the play area, so you can watch them while they're having fun.

For us adults, there are plenty of shady trees to set up a picnic blanket under and relax while the children frolic around.

On the other side of the park, there's a track for jogging and workout areas.

Adventure Park is an excellent place to spend a little time to relax and de-stress.

I'd recommend it for a leisurely afternoon with the family.

Explore History at the Jonathan Bailey House

I was awestruck when I first visited the Jonathan Bailey House, the first house of Whittier!

The city did an incredible job preserving this piece of history.

One step inside, and you'll understand why.

Everything you see is authentic, from the original furnishings to the historical items discovered when the house was raised from its foundation.

They even found an unused bar of Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap!

I know it's a quirky fact, but it's fascinating nonetheless.

You can learn about these artifacts and more on the informative tours provided by the lovely ladies who volunteer there.

Moreover, the house is only open on the 2nd and 4th Sunday every month from 1-4 p.m., making every visit feel unique and special.

Jonathan Bailey, the original owner, was one of the first ranchers in Whittier.

If you've seen the movie "A Million Ways to Die in the West," you might have a sense of what his life was like.

But Bailey wasn't just a rancher but also a pioneer in the Victorian era, a Quaker, Abolitionist, and Pacifist.

He followed John Greenleaf Whittier, another Quaker, west and settled in the town that would one day bear Whittier's name.

Bailey's ranch house was one of the first to have indoor plumbing; he and his wife even had the privilege of meeting Abraham Lincoln.

One of Lincoln's law library bookshelves is on display at the Bailey House, a testament to Bailey's community leadership and his commitment to his new home.

Walking around the outside of the house is an adventure in itself.

There's a Magnolia tree planted from a cutting from a tree put on the White House lawn by 7th President Andrew Jackson.

Believe it or not, that tree is still alive and even featured on the $20 bill.

With every visit, I wish they'd preserved the entire street as it was back in Bailey's time.

But for now, I'll settle for the incredible glimpse into history that the Jonathan Bailey House provides.

Every summer, the crown jewel of our neighborhood, Amelia Mayberry Park, comes to life with the joyful sounds of kids playing and families enjoying picnics.

The park is vast, featuring a lively playground, a basketball court, a baseball field, and a community center.

Moreover, the place is teeming with life and laughter, depicting a perfect summer day.

The playground is a paradise for kids, surrounded by beautiful greenery.

In July, it becomes a magical wonderland with multiple species of butterflies migrating through the park.

But be warned, parents, seating can be limited, so you may find yourself standing more often than not!

I love venturing for long walks in the park, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

The house is built from adobe blocks and has been renovated to preserve its original charm.

You'll find clothing, musical instruments, furniture, tools, tableware, photos, and many other items from the era.

Each article tells a different story, a different piece of California's rich history.

Walking through the rooms, you can't help but imagine what life was like back then.

Sorensen Park is also an everyday retreat.

Bosque Del Rio Hondo is a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy fresh air in the city's heart.

Explore History at the American Military Museum

I finally had a chance to drop by the American Military Museum this weekend, and boy, did it impress me!

The museum is open from Friday to Sunday, and the rich collection of 170+ military vehicles from WWI to Operation Desert Storm is a sight to behold.

Having spent countless hours playing with toy tanks and trucks as a kid, seeing these machines up close was a delight.

Check out the turrets, APCs, and torpedo tubes from a ship to the 5-inch cannons, tanks, trucks, a helicopter, bombs, and bomb-loading carts.

The museum takes you on a journey through the annals of military history.

It was like opening a book into the past, feeling the visceral energy these machines once carried on the battlefield.

I can't recommend the American Military Museum enough if you're a history enthusiast or a military buff.

You'll get lost in the wonder of these impressive machines and the stories they hold.

Just make sure to carve out enough time to take it all in - trust me, you won't regret it!

Spend the Day at the Hsi Lai Temple

Sometimes, the hustle and bustle of life in the city gets too much.

On those days, I retreat to my favorite hidden gem, the Hsi Lai Temple.

Nestled in the city's heart, this traditional Chinese Buddhist temple is a haven of tranquility and peace.

From the moment I step through its gates, the serene and zen atmosphere envelops me, instantly washing away the day's stress.

Even though the temple is not massive in size, there is a multitude of nooks and crannies that invite exploration.

I often lose track of time, leisurely wandering around and soaking in the beautiful sights.

One of the highlights of my visits is the library. It's a quiet space filled with an extensive collection of books covering various topics.  

Some days, I love to sit in one of the relaxing reading rooms and lose myself in a book.

Next, I often make my way to the art gallery. They frequently rotate exhibits, which means there's always something new to see.

I've spent countless hours admiring the stunning pieces on display.

Adjacent to the gallery is a quaint tea room and gift shop where I love to unwind with a cup of tea.

A visit to the Hsi Lai Temple isn't complete without a trip to the vegetarian buffet.

Though I didn't have the chance to try it on my last visit, the cakes I got, made fresh on the spot, were divine.

Do you ever need to escape the city noise and dive into nature? Well, Hacienda Hills Trailhead is the perfect remedy.

Its various trails range from moderate to challenging, so it's become my go-to spot for early morning hikes.

I usually start with the Coyote Trail leading up to Skyline Drive.

The trail's moderate difficulty ensures a good workout, especially on the way to the Water Tower, which I've made my usual turning point.

But the real thrill starts when I jog down the steep hill from the Water Tower through Ahwingna Trail to 7th Street.

This circuit alone is about 3.78 miles!

And there's also the Puma Trail, Native Oak Trail, and four more trails connecting from Whittier waiting to be explored.

What I love about these trails is their versatility.

They're kid-friendly and accessible for mountain biking and even horseback riding.
