Of course, what makes Maple Hall truly unique is the bowling alley in the basement.

Positioned majestically atop a hill, the 1858 home is a splendid relic of the past.

The Mabry-Hazen family were slave owners, a fact that has understandably deterred many from visiting.

Yet, I've always believed that to truly appreciate our present, we must understand our past – even the painful parts.

When I heard the new Executive Director was dedicated to telling the complete history of the Mabry-Hazen legacy, I was intrigued.

Recently, a special tour was held at the Mabry-Hazen House.

I decided to seize the free opportunity, quelling my curiosity about this enigmatic mansion.

I must caution anyone who might be considering a visit – this is an old house and may present challenges for those with mobility deficiencies.

The tour includes ascending and descending stairs, which can be challenging, given the age of the structure.

But despite this, the tour was an enriching experience.

The docent deftly navigated us through the gripping drama of the Mabry-Hazen family history, complete with tales of Wild West-style gunfights.

A delightful surprise was the extensive Christmas decorations throughout the home, adding a festive touch to our journey into the past.

The Mabry-Hazen House tour was not just insightful but also deeply moving.

It felt like we had traveled back in time, the house beautifully conserved in its original era.

Jump into the Cool Depths of Mead's Quarry Lake

If there is a hidden gem in our neighborhood, it sure is Mead's Quarry Lake.

Now you may not think a quarry lake sounds like a fun day trip, but wait till you experience it yourself!

First off, let me tell you, it's absolutely free!

Yes, you heard that right.

No entrance fee, no parking fee, nothing!

You want to swim? Go ahead, dive right in!

The water is refreshing.

Remember though, there are no lifeguards, so safety is in your own hands.

Floaties are a good idea if you're not a natural swimmer, especially for the kiddos.

Speaking of kids, they absolutely love the little sandy beach and shore.

Most of the ground around Mead's Quarry Lake is rocky, so water shoes can be handy if you're not used to walking on stones.

One of the most picturesque spots is the floating decks on the water.

You can just sit on them and soak in the tranquility or make a big splash by jumping off into the deep quarry water.

It's a popular place, and parking lots can fill up fast, but there are three of them, so you should find a spot.

The lake isn't just about swimming, though.

It's surrounded by beautiful nature trails, which are a favorite amongst local joggers and walkers, including those with dogs.

It's a dog-friendly place, but remember to keep them on a leash when not swimming.

The trail is also handicap accessible, so everyone can enjoy the beauty of nature.

There are restrooms available, but no showers - so keep that in mind.

The park’s hiking trails are a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The trail to the quarry, though not distinctly marked, is an easy hike.

The quiet rustling of leaves and the chirping of the birds were the only sounds I could hear.

It was not crowded, making it a perfect retreat for me.

After a refreshing hike, I decided to take a dip in the swimming quarry.

The clear, cool water was invigorating. I swam around, soaking in the beauty of the quarry, the cliffs surrounding it adding to its allure.

Walking through its grounds is like taking a step back in time.

The houses carry a certain air of rich history that's palpable, seeping from the very walls.

Taking a guided tour is a must - being able to hear the fascinating tales of John Seviers' life is something that brings history to life in a whole different way.

The gift shop is another charming feature, selling a range of cute souvenirs.

One purchase that stood out to me was the Passport book.

It's an excellent initiative that provides the opportunity to tour seven historical spots in the state, helping to explore further and understand the history of Tennessee.

While Marble Springs doesn't have a lot of original artifacts, the land itself is truly beautiful and bathed in history.

Moreover, the team is doing amazing work to restore and preserve the site.

And it's not just about the buildings or the land - the weaving demonstration was a unique touch that helped to paint a vivid picture of the life led by the Sevier family.

One thing that surprised me was the block of tea, and other remnants of daily life found there.

They serve as a poignant reminder of the people who once inhabited the land.
