About Seven Magic Mountains

Seven Magic Mountains, located near Las Vegas, Nevada, is an extraordinary public art installation that stands out as a vibrant contrast against the stark, natural backdrop of the desert. Created by renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, this large-scale artwork features seven towering stacks of brightly colored boulders. For photographers, this unique and visually striking landmark offers a surreal and whimsical subject in an otherwise barren landscape.

Each of the seven totems, reaching heights of over 30 feet, is composed of locally-sourced limestone boulders. These rocks have been painted in a range of fluorescent colors, creating a striking visual impact. The bold hues of the boulders – including vivid pinks, blues, yellows, and oranges – present a stark contrast to the muted tones of the surrounding desert and the blue sky above. This juxtaposition makes for dynamic and eye-catching photographs.

The installation’s placement within the Ivanpah Valley offers a vast, open desert landscape as a backdrop, allowing for a variety of compositions. Photographers can capture wide shots that show all seven totems in their entirety, emphasizing their scale and the expanse of the desert, or focus on individual stacks to explore the interplay of color and form.

Seven Magic Mountains is particularly striking during sunrise and sunset when the changing light of the sky complements and enhances the vivid colors of the boulders. The soft light during these times creates a magical and almost ethereal quality in photographs.
