Just another day on N Witchduck Road, a stone's throw away from Sentara hospital, I found myself standing in front of a historical sculpture that was almost hidden from the main road.

I must tell you, it's not a sight you'd easily come across, I used the Atlas Obscura app to find it.

This sculpture is a tribute to the last woman convicted of witchcraft in our very own Princess Anne County - Grace Sherwood Statue.

It's a harsh reminder of an era when trials by water were considered lawful.

As the story goes, Grace consented to this trial, where she was put in water just over her head.

The logic was, if she sank she was innocent, but if she floated, she was a witch.

Fate had it that Grace floated and was thus convicted and imprisoned.

Grace Sherwood Statue stands as a testament to her ordeal and subsequent resilience.

Released eventually, she lived till the ripe age of 80, farming and carving a life for herself.

A letter from the governor, included on the statue, is essentially an apology to her family and a posthumous exoneration of Grace.

The statue isn't just a stone figure, it's a mirror into our county's deep history.

And while it was a struggle to locate it initially, the effort was entirely worth it.

What took me by surprise was the respect it commanded - people actually left money and coins at the statue!
