Banh Mi My Tho #3

If there is a place that tickles my taste buds just right, it's  Banh Mi My Tho #3.

Nestled in the heart of our city, this spot has been my go-to for Vietnamese food for quite some time now.

I've always been a fan of authentic tastes, and as far as Vietnamese cuisine is concerned, this is just the real deal.

On my last visit, I savored a Banh Mi sandwich, and oh boy, what an experience!

The bread was just the perfect size, easily manageable, and well worth the price.

The vegetables accompanying the sandwich were impeccably pickled.

I'm not one for sweets usually, but this was not too sweet, striking a flawless balance.

I felt they could have been a bit more generous with the jalapeños, but that's just me being a spice lover!

One thing I can't resist whenever I visit is their Vietnamese iced coffee.

They make it daily, and the taste is just heavenly.

The sweetness level is perfect, not watered down, and absolutely not overpowering.

To top it all off, I delved into Xoi Banh Kep.

While the restaurant didn't make it, it was a delightful snack to wrap up my lunch.

I love how they have outdoor seating; it's perfect for those sunny afternoons.

Most of the orders seem to be takeout, but I enjoy basking in the ambiance as I enjoy my meal.

Now, if you're planning a visit, remember they only accept cash payments.

But hey, at $5 for a banh mi and $5.25 for broken rice or Vermicelli noodles; it's a steal!

Their quality and taste beat many other pricier places I've been to.

Plus, they have their own parking lot, so no worries about finding a spot.

La Familia Comida Mexicana

Who would have thought that in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, on a nondescript street, you'd stumble upon a treasure trove of genuine Mexican cuisine?

Nestled between modern high-rises, La Familia Comida Mexicana serves up a slice of Mexico, reminiscent of the cozy home-like eateries found in the heart of Mexico City.

This unassuming little spot doesn't just serve food; it serves an experience.

Here, you walk in as a customer and leave feeling like family.

Their Burrito Mojado de Asada, plump and bursting with flavor, is a meal that champions the comforting allure of home-cooked food.

Topped with rich sour cream and homemade guacamole, it's a dish that'll take you straight to the heart of Mexico without the airfare.

La Familia is not limited to burritos, though its all-day breakfast and lunch menu boasts an array of delectable choices.

The Huevos Rancheros, I heard, is 'really good,' a promise that has me planning a visit soon for breakfast.

Despite the hustle and bustle during lunch hours, the familial atmosphere is never compromised.

If you're craving a taste of Indonesia right here in California, there's only one spot to hit - Medan Kitchen.

You know that feeling of longing for something you've left behind?

That exact sensation hit me when I moved here from Indonesia.

However, my trip to Medan Kitchen turned out to be like a visit back home.

One could call it a one-stop shop for everything Indonesian.

Here, I found meals, snacks, drinks, crackers, spices, and more, all transported directly from our homeland to the sunny shores of California.

Anytime I find myself missing those authentic Indonesian flavors, I make a beeline for this little piece of home away from home.

Banh Mi My Tho Vietnamese Sandwich

Just when the morning sun begins to paint the sky with hues of gold, there I am, standing in front of my favorite Vietnamese eatery, Banh Mi My Tho Vietnamese Sandwich, ready to enjoy a hearty bite before I catch my flight.

The opening hours - as early as 6:30 am – help me start my day on a delicious note.

Tucked away in a corner of Alhambra, this little gem has a second location that never fails to impress me with its food and service.

With plenty of parking, delightful chips, and sandwich options, it's the perfect pick-me-up before a long day.

One unforgettable treat from this place is their grilled pork sandwich, a steal at only $5-$6.

The taste of the tender, juicy pork encased in a crisp baguette makes me want to return again and again.

Their unique logo, even adorning the bathroom seat covers, adds an endearing touch to the unpretentious ambiance.

The chicken banh mi is another crowd-pleaser I can't get enough of.

It's not served shredded here but grilled, which gives it a unique texture.

Though it's a bit on the saltier side, the savory tang is a guilty pleasure I often give in to.

The shredded carrot and radish add a fresh, crunchy element that balances the saltiness perfectly.

Rose City Pizza

Have you ever had a pizza that just made your taste buds sing?

Well, for me, that sensory symphony happens every time I visit Rose City Pizza.

Trust me; this isn't your run-of-the-mill pizza parlor.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the friendly vibe of the place.

They'll help you navigate their unique menu, which is brimming with unexpected combinations that somehow work.

One pizza that stands out for me is their large Birria pizza.

Served with a side of hot Cheeto crumbles, it's a flavor explosion you wouldn't want to miss.

And then there's their personal Margherita pizza- a classic masterpiece topped with fresh basil that they clearly don't skimp on.

But the charm of Rose City Pizza doesn't stop at their pizzas.

If you're a craft beer enthusiast like myself, you're in for a treat.

They have a solid selection on tap that pairs beautifully with their pies.

Or, if you're in a more adventurous mood, why not try their Lychee green tea?

It's refreshingly different and the perfect thirst quencher to go with your meal.

Their Alpastor pizza, Alpastor torta, and grilled cheese Pastrami are also personal favorites, and I've heard great things about the Manila Sunrise pizza too.

It has a distinctive longanisa-flavored sausage topping, which may not be authentic, but still packs a punch, flavor-wise.

As for me, I'm looking forward to trying their popcorn chicken pizza next!

Wei’s Cuisine Kitchen

Oh, what a journey it has been at Wei's Cuisine Kitchen, but I tell you, it's been an adventure with every bite.

The first time I walked into this place, I was craving their clay pot.

What a revelation it was!

The soup was an explosion of flavors that had my tastebuds dancing with joy.

It was a delightful surprise that somewhat made up for the absence of my beloved clay pot.

The language of food is universal, and their delicious dishes transcend all communication barriers.

Just a heads up, though, they only accept cash or Venmo payments.

Bun Mam Cay Dua

Every corner of Los Angeles is filled with diverse eateries, but there's a quaint little gem that I hold close to my heart.

Bun Mam Cay Dua, a mom-and-pop eatery, is a treasure trove of delicious Vietnamese cuisine with an authentic palate of flavors that teleport me straight back to Saigon.

Walking into Bun Mam Cay Dua is like walking into a second home.

The place is spotless, giving it a warm and welcoming ambiance.

The menu is packed with hearty, high-quality Vietnamese dishes, but two have captured my heart (and stomach).

The Banh Canh Cua, a thick, hearty noodle soup with crab clusters, is a bowl of heartwarming comfort food that always hits the spot.

Now, the star of the show is none other than their eponymous dish, the Bun Mam.

It's a complex soup with fermented fish, shrimp, squid, and pork belly - an eclectic mix of flavors that is sheer indulgence.

With generous portions, fresh ingredients, and a menu as niche, as it gets, Bun Mam Cay Dua is a culinary experience.

And don't forget to add a good amount of garlic + chili vinegar into your soup - it's a delicious way to freshen your breath or even spice up your love life, as I quickly found out after a memorable lunch date.

Di Pilla's Italian Restaurant

Have you ever sunk your teeth into a slice of pizza bread with the perfect balance of a crisp crust and soft interior or indulged in a plate of manicotti so authentic it transports your taste buds straight to the heart of Italy?

That's the experience you get when you dine at Di Pilla's Italian Restaurant.

I've been going to Di Pilla's for years with my family, and I've yet to be disappointed.

Each visit is a treat, right from the warm welcome to the delightful aromas that greet you as you step into the old-world charm of the restaurant, complete with white linen-draped tables.

The menu is a cornucopia of Italian classics, each a testament to the authentic Italian recipes passed down through generations.

Of course, their pizza bread is legendary, but it's their antipasti that's truly captivating.

Freshly sliced meats and cheeses, vibrant vegetables, and marinated olives - it's a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

But the real stars of the show are their mains.

From a heartwarming plate of manicotti to their big portions, there's an option for every kind of Italian food lover.

On my last visit, I ordered the sausage, onion, and bell peppers with tomato sauce served over fettuccine noodles.

The homemade sauce was rich and flavorful, and the homemade bread, served warm, was the perfect accompaniment.

If you're looking for vegetarian options, their veggie lasagna and eggplant Parmigiano are equally delightful.

Each dish is served with such care and attention to detail that you can't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into preparing each meal.

And what's more, Di Pilla's offers takeout, which means you can enjoy their delicious fare from the comfort of your home.

When you're in the mood for a taste of Japan, the search doesn't have to take you further than Sen Sushi.

Plus, they've got a homemade tiramisu that's out of this world.

Trust me; it's a dessert you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

It's not just the food and the ambiance that sets Sen Sushi apart.

They also have a unique way of calculating tips, doing it pre-tax when not many restaurants are doing that now.

And in case you're wondering, yes, the toro is a must-try.

Yuan's Hotpot Los Angeles

A hidden gem right in the humble neighborhood of LA is Yuan's Hotpot.

Boasting a high ceiling, bright lighting, and a comfortable distance between tables, this place offers a cozy atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere.

This isn't your typical overcrowded hotpot place – in fact, here, you can really unwind and savor your meal.

Check them out at Yuan's Hotpot LA.

The food alone is worth the trip.

From crispy pork to beef belly, wagyu beef, and their specialty house-marinated chicken cartilage, everything is simply phenomenal.

What impressed me the most was the tenderness of the meat.

The beef belly you could dip in egg before you cook is a game-changer, and their crispy pork with spices on the side is truly to die for.

I'm a fan of spicy food, and their signature spicy broth hits just the right spot.

If you aren't that into spicy food, don't worry, you can also opt for their flavorful bone broth.

The snack bar is quite the adventure.

You never know what you might find, but rest assured, it's going to be good.

I usually celebrate special occasions here, and the wide variety ensures there's something for everyone.

On my last visit, I ordered a mountain of dishes, including mushroom combo, handmade pork meatball, Angus ribeye, kung fu potato, wood ear mushroom, brown sugar rice cake, and fish.

It's a lot, but every single dish is worth trying!

A must-try is their sparkling passionfruit drink.

It adds a delightful fizziness to your meal.

I loved it so much that I've been trying to recreate it at home!

What really sets Yuan's Hotpot apart, however, is their exceptional service.

Jim's Famous Quarterpound Burger

There's something to be said about a breakfast that keeps you filled all day.

You know the one I mean - the kind with eggs, hash browns, and a steaming cup of coffee that sends a wave of warmth through your body as the sun rises.

That's exactly what I found at Jim's Famous Quarterpound Burger.

My typical morning jaunts landed me at their doorstep one weekday at 7:10 in the morning.

The place was already buzzing with the aroma of sizzling hash and fresh coffee.

And oh boy, did they deliver!

Every bite was a delightful mix of flavors, rich and full, enhancing the taste of the freshly cracked eggs perfectly.

It wasn't just the breakfast that impressed me.

I returned for lunch one day and tried their gyro and cheeseburger combo.

They managed to hit the perfect balance between fresh ingredients and non-greasy cooking.

I have to admit; I was quite amused to enjoy a gyro from a burger place.

A smidgen too much onion for my taste, but it was good, nonetheless.

On another visit, I indulged in their burger and chili cheese fries.

The burger was fantastic, and the chili cheese fries were the perfect sidekick.

All this at prices that didn't burn a hole in my pocket!

Banh Xeo Quan

Let me tell you all about a delightful culinary discovery I made right here in our bustling neighborhood.

It was just another Friday evening when my taste buds were calling out for something exotic.

I stumbled upon a unique Vietnamese restaurant Banh Xeo Quan.

I tried their specialty, Banh Xeo - a crispy fried crepe that comes with a delightful mix of shrimp, pork, mushrooms, beansprouts, eggs, and onion.

The crisp crust owes its vibrant color to turmeric, adding an authentic touch to every bite.

And here comes the fun part – you get to eat it with your hands!

Just bundle up the Banh Xeo with some lettuce and mint leaves, drizzle some vinegar sauce, and add a dash of chili if you like it hot.

It was comfort food at its best, not too heavy, yet entirely satisfying.

The place, always buzzing with happy customers, still managed to maintain attentive and fast service.

Pho Dakao - Rosemead

I'll never forget the first time I stepped into Pho Dakao - Rosemead.

There was a vibrant energy that instantly drew me in.

The scent of simmering broth filled the air, reminding me of those long-ago afternoons spent in my grandmother's kitchen.

What sets Pho Dakao apart is their specialization in Chicken Pho or Pho Ga.

Now I know what you must be thinking, "Chicken Pho? Really?"

Trust me; I had the same reaction.

But one slurp of their hearty, flavorful broth was all it took to convert me.

The chicken might not be cage-free, but the dish is nothing less than stellar.

The restaurant itself is clean and well-maintained, with air conditioning, a godsend during the hot summer months.

But the star of the show is undeniably their Chicken Pho.

Priced at around $13, it is incredibly reasonable for the area.

For the adventurous, don't miss their Dry rice noodles with side sauce.

It's something you absolutely must try at least once.

One of the highlights of my frequent visits is the Santa Barbara Char Burger.

Not to mention their onion rings – perfectly golden-brown, crispy, and generously served with a side of a delectable ranch dip.

Mr Dragon Noodle House

There's no better place to satisfy your Asian food cravings than at Mr Dragon Noodle House.

The moment I walked through the door, my senses were overwhelmed by the delightful aroma of their noodle soups.

With ample parking space, the restaurant is easily accessible and the perfect spot for a spontaneous dinner plan.

As a group of six, we were warmly welcomed and given three order sheets to facilitate equal bill splitting.

To everyone's surprise, our food arrived in no time, which is a clear testament to their quick and efficient service.

Of all the dishes we tried, the popcorn chicken and spicy braised beef noodle soup stood out.

The fusion of flavors was mind-blowing and left us craving for more.

The menu at Mr Dragon Noodle House may not be as extensive as some other Asian restaurants in the city, but it has all the essentials, and at a much more affordable price.

Keep in mind, though, that the spice level is not for the faint-hearted.

But for those who can handle the heat like me, you can add more chili!

Despite a few dishes not hitting the 5-star mark, the majority easily scored a 4.

Now, for the star of our meal - the spicy noodles with tendons only paired with Xiao Long Bao.

This gem of a place is my regular haunt for catching up with friends or simply indulging my cravings for authentic Chinese food.

If you're a fan of spicy food, let me tell you, their king pao chicken is a fiery wonder.

Just a few bites in, and I can feel the pleasant warmth spreading through me.

And if you happen to be in Orange County, where finding quality Chinese food can be a bit of a challenge, China Bistro is your answer.

La Vie French Restaurant

There's a little corner of Los Angeles that feels like a Parisian getaway, and it's called La Vie French Restaurant.

Stepping inside, I was immediately transported to a quaint bistro along the Seine with Eifel Tower decorations adorning the walls.

The menu is a cornucopia of traditional French dishes, from coq au vin to escargots, each dish whisking your taste buds away to the City of Lights.

One of the highlights of dining at La Vie is the inclusion of a 3-course meal with your entree.

You get to enjoy a serving of bread, soup, and salad before your main dish arrives.

I remember the Caesar salad being particularly delightful, with its dressing standing as a testament to the restaurant's commitment to staying true to French cuisine.

The lamb chops, my go-to order, are a flavor-filled delight.

They come served with asparagus and a delightful carrot puree, which complements the succulent lamb perfectly.

The sauce that comes with the lamb chops is a culinary masterpiece and, in my opinion, the best accompaniment for lamb chops I've ever experienced.

As a seafood lover, I was in heaven.

My partner and I are particularly fond of their gumbo; it's one of the few places that gets it right with the inclusion of okra.

Another standout dish is their clam chowder bowl, a creamy, rich concoction that leaves you craving for more.

The Dive Oyster Bar isn't just about food though; their drink menu is equally impressive.

Their drink of the month never fails to delight.

I recall the 'Mother of Dragons' being one of my favorites, only to be rivaled by the 'Watermelon Sugar High.'

Nuoc Mia Vien Dong (San Gabriel)

A hot summer afternoon in San Gabriel Valley beckons for a refreshing drink, and where better to find it than at Nuoc Mia Vien Dong, nestled in the Square Supermarket shopping center?

This little gem is run by Vietnamese-Chinese who are fluent in Vietnamese, Cantonese, and English.

Diving into their menu, there's a range of Vietnamese staples like pho, bún riêu, and com tam.

But, let me tell you, it's not the typical sit-down fare.

They've got a fast-food spin on these classics.

Don't get me wrong, they're tasty, but the pho has a hint of MSG, the bún riêu is a bit light on the crab meat and tofu, and the com tam has been missing a piece of cha trung hap since 2011.

But here's the juicy part, the real reason I keep coming back: the nuoc mía.

Their sugarcane juice, freshly pressed right in front of you, is a concoction of heavenly sweetness and sour kumquat.

And the best part?

You can choose how much ice you want and the size that suits you.

I usually go for the small with ice, perfect for 10 to 15 sips.

It might not last long, but it's the perfect pick-me-up on a hot day - a healthier alternative to the milk tea or Vietnamese coffee you'll find elsewhere in the plaza.
