The Sun Vegan

One rainy afternoon, I found myself stepping into a ray of sunshine known as The Sun Vegan.

Wanting to try their food for what felt like forever, I was delighted when they lived up to every expectation I had.

From the moment the water hit my lips, I knew my experience here was going to be different.

My friend and I decided to indulge in their spring rolls, fish tacos, and spicy lemongrass chicken.

The peanut dipping sauce for the spring rolls was a delightful surprise, neither too thick nor overly sweet.

I found myself marveling at the fish tacos, wondering how it was possible for a vegan dish to taste so authentically fishy!

The Sun Vegan is a family-run affair with a mother-daughter duo at the helm who are both a delight to interact with.

I've been singing praises of this delightful restaurant ever since my first visit and can't wait for my next meal there.

Even though I'm not strictly vegan, I find myself drawn to The Sun Vegan bi-weekly, with their Royal Pho and Garlic Strips always on my order.

The dishes are not only unique, but they taste better than anything else in the area.

California Shabu Shabu

The first thing that hits you when you walk through the doors at California Shabu Shabu is the pristine cleanliness and brightness of the place.

An immaculate setup complements the neat ambiance, but the star of the show is definitely the food.

The place offers a variety of meat plates that you can choose from.

One time, I tried the prime rib eye, choice rib eye, and pork belly, and I was pleasantly surprised by the superior quality.

Although I had expected the prime rib eye to be the standout, the choice rib eye and pork belly were the ones that stole the show, being so soft and tender.

What I appreciate most about California Shabu Shabu is the crisp and fresh veggies that add a delightful crunch to the meal.

What's more, they recommended a spicy sauce that enhances the flavor of the sesame/goma sauce.

Be warned, though - a single drop is enough unless you're a fan of all things fiery!

Another thing that sets this place apart is the complimentary bowl of kombu soy sauce they offer.

This mini treat is perfect for enjoying your ramen at the end of the meal.

He was kind enough to spend some time chatting with me and even helped me choose a soup.

I ended up with the Sukiyaki soup, which turned out to be a great choice.

Sofra Urbana

You know those delightful discoveries you make when you weren't even looking?

That's how I stumbled upon Sofra Urbana, a pint-sized pizzeria with scrumptious pies, sandwiches, salads, and wings right here in our city.

It's more than just a pizzeria, though - it's a little window into an entirely different culture.

Have you ever tasted Bosnian cuisine?

Even if you haven't, Sofra Urbana is the place to get your hands on some authentic European delicacies.

I remember the first time I saw "Bosnian Entrees" on their menu, I was thrilled.

I'd spent years in New York, surrounded by colleagues from the Eastern parts of Europe, who introduced me to culinary masterpieces I hadn't imagined.

Since coming back to California, I'd been on a quest to recreate those gastronomic experiences.

And then, I found Sofra Urbana.

I decided to start small with the Cevapi.

Being more used to pizzas and burgers, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish it all.

But oh, how surprised I was!

Each bite was a hearty mix of flavors - the meat was juicy, and the bread was crispy outside and soft inside.

And though I was stuffed to the brim, I couldn't help but be excited for my next visit.

I've got my eyes set on their Burek next.

New to Bosnian cuisine?

They'll guide you through it with utmost patience and friendliness.

Bon Tofu & Grill

You know you're in for a treat when you step into Bon Tofu & Grill.

The lure of authentic Korean cuisine is simply irresistible - from the inviting aroma of tofu soup to the sizzling sound of bulgogi on the grill.

This place is more than just a restaurant; it's a culinary adventure!

The star of the show here has to be the tofu soup.

I usually go for the beef version, which takes the crown for its rich, hearty flavor.

But I must admit, it's a tough call since everything on their menu is a gastronomic delight - be it the galbi, bibimbap bowls, fried chicken, or the bulgogi.

And talk about the side dishes!

Bon Tofu & Grill is a popular spot, so there can be a bit of a wait, especially during peak hours.

But the taste and quality of their food make it worth it.

Just plan to arrive a bit early if you want to ensure you get the full dining experience before the kitchen starts to wind down for the night.

It's tucked away on Magnolia Boulevard, which means parking is easy, and the ambiance is peaceful – a perfect complement to the satisfying meal you’re sure to have.

One of the standout dishes for me has to be the boneless Bulgogi, which I'd go as far as saying is the best I've ever had.

But don't just take my word for it; experience it for yourself.

Yes, there might be a bit of a wait as they cook everything to order, but trust me when I say that it's well worth the wait.

You'll be rewarded with a feast that is not only fresh and tasty but also a testament to the high quality they maintain in every dish.

Tsuruhashi Yakiniku

If there's a place in the city that can transport you right into the heart of Japan with its authentic cuisine and cozy atmosphere, it's got to be Tsuruhashi.

Trust me, as someone who has been to Japan and dined at many local eateries; this venue has truly mastered the art of Japanese grilling.

You know a place serves really good food when it's always packed, right?

Well, I can tell you, Tsuruhashi is one of those places.

It's almost always bustling with customers, and I've learned the hard way that reserving your spot on their waiting list in person is the best way to secure a seat.

Believe me; the wait is absolutely worth it!

The selection of food is diverse, but my personal favorite combo is the weekday special—it's a good mix of beef and chicken, and it costs only $47.

Their beef tongue is something you'll fall in love with at the first bite, and their yukke raw beef is a slice of heaven.

And should you decide to try something different, just go for the marbled cuts of beef.

Pair it with rice and a cold beer, and you're in for an unforgettable meal.

As for the dessert, their kinako ice cream is a must-try.

It's the perfect sweet ending to a savory Japanese meal.

Momoyama

When you first walk into Momoyama, you're instantly greeted with a warm, welcoming vibe.

The ambiance is traditional yet modern, creating a perfect setting for an authentic sushi dining experience.

And trust me; the food does not disappoint!

With their 'Omakase only' policy, you're in for a delightful surprise every time you visit.

You can RSVP on Yelp, as walk-ins are not entertained.

I've been there multiple times, and their menu never ceases to amaze me.

They keep introducing new items, making every visit an exciting culinary adventure.

And if you're still feeling peckish after the omakase, you can always order more.

Every dish is not just cooked but crafted with an attention to detail that's awe-inspiring.

The presentation is as remarkable as the taste, making every plate a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

Among my favorites is the uni - if you're a uni lover like me, you definitely don't want to miss it.

Paul's Coffee Shop

Ever since I first stepped into Paul's Coffee Shop, I knew I had found my regular haunt.

It was the smell of freshly brewed coffee and classic American food wafting through the air that drew me in.

Their offerings served on metal trays are simply delectable, but there's more to it than just the food.

The military-themed decor gives the place a unique charm and sets it apart.

It's like a mini-museum dedicated to those who've served our country.

Veterans and military enthusiasts alike would appreciate the neat historical memorabilia adorning the walls.

It's an experience of its own kind, eating amongst such rich history.

From the way they greet you at the door to the way they serve, their warm and enthusiastic service never fails to make my day.

Being a lover of comfort food, I must say their dishes never disappoint.

The chicken fried steak, for instance, is a hearty treat that can easily feed two.

Moreover, the daily whiteboard specials keep the menu fresh and exciting, making every visit a bit of a surprise.

Chidori Sushi

Do you ever stumble upon a place so spectacular that you're reluctant to share it, for fear of losing its tranquility to the masses?

Chidori Sushi, nestled in our neighborhood, is exactly that hidden gem!

It was an accidental discovery during a pit stop to recharge my Tesla and boy, what a delightful surprise it has been.

Experience a taste of Japan right here without ever having to board a flight.

The sushi here is nothing short of phenomenal - as fresh as it gets!

My taste buds have been treated to the best sushi I've ever had, time and time again.

I've visited Chidori Sushi at least six times, and every visit has been a gastronomic delight.

They're also helpful, knowledgeable, and personable - they've become my friends.

The menu at Chidori Sushi is a culmination of unique flavors designed to cater to diverse tastes.

The Paradise Roll has been my personal favorite.

Believe me; it's a culinary journey to paradise with every bite!

The Scorpion Roll with its spicy zing, Fried Calamari, and Saki are other must-tries.

While the food is the star, the ambiance is no less.

Cool reggae music plays at the perfect volume, enhancing the dining experience.

Carlitos Diner

When the cravings for Mexican food kick in, my go-to spot is none other than Carlitos Diner.

This diner serves authentic Mexican cuisine that never fails to impress.

Their service is simply outstanding; quick, pleasant, and always attentive.

As soon as I walk in, I'm greeted by the savory smell of their crispy chips, which are perfectly light, never greasy.

Paired with their spicy salsa, it's a combo that can make any taste bud dance.

I'm a big fan of their carnitas.

It arrives on a generously-sized plate with a very finely chopped cilantro garnish.

The rice that comes with it is fluffy, with a smattering of veggies mixed in.

And the beans?

Just divine.

Usually, I'm not a fan of beans, but these are the kind I won't leave behind.

Trust me when I say the carnitas are absolutely fantastic!

On days when I fancy a bit of sizzle, I opt for chicken breast fajitas.

They arrive at the table steaming, creating a tantalizing spectacle.

The flavor is just as impressive as the presentation, making them equally delightful.

The atmosphere at Carlitos Diner is warm and inviting, making it a great spot for casual dining.

The prices are reasonable, guaranteeing a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.

While the burritos may be smaller than one might hope, they do not compromise on the tastiness.

You'll also enjoy their deliciously crispy fries.

Thuy Nhi

Whenever I'm in the mood for a satisfying, delicious meal, I make my way to Thuy Nhi.

The aroma of freshly baked baguettes, rich with the scent of butter, immediately greets me as soon as I walk in.

I make it a point to arrive just when the baguettes are out of the oven – soft on the inside, with a spectacular crust on the outside.

The dac biet sandwich here is a hidden gem.

Unlike the options at some of the busier sandwich spots around the city, Thuy Nhi's version of this traditional Vietnamese sandwich always seems to hit the right balance of flavors.

It's a must-try, and I can't recommend it enough!

When I'm in the area, Thuy Nhi is my go-to spot for coffee and banh mi.

The spring rolls, banh mi, and the coffee here are excellent, and I always recommend it to anyone who asks me for good local food places.

One day, I found myself craving banh cuon and, luckily, a friend had previously mentioned that Thuy Nhi sold it.

So, I decided to drop by for a late lunch/early dinner.

I ended up buying a pound of each option, which came with bean sprouts and sauce.

To top it off, I got a banh bao, baguette with mayo and pate, and cha chien.

The total cost came to approximately $27, but it provided me with 6-8 hearty meals.

The baguette was delicious and very flavorful, with the scent of butter quite pronounced.

My niece also loved the cha chien and kept asking for seconds.

Taste of Beauty

What a delight it was to have dinner at the Taste of Beauty, a gem in the heart of our city!

This isn't just any ordinary restaurant; it stands out for its unique approach to Asian vegetarian cuisine.

This is exactly what we experienced.

Every dish we were served had a story behind it, expertly narrated by our server.

It added an extra layer of enjoyment to the dining experience.

The food wasn't just delicious but was also aesthetically pleasing, making every bite a delight for both the eyes and the palate.

Taste of Beauty really takes the phrase 'you eat with your eyes first' to a whole new level.

But what really sets this place apart is their commitment to using whole foods with minimal processing.

I have to say; the dessert was an exception, a guilty pleasure that completed the experience.

Ike's Love & Sandwiches

Have you ever bitten into a sandwich and felt like you were tasting a slice of heaven?

That's exactly how I felt when I first tried Ike's Love & Sandwiches!

Hidden in the heart of Fountain Valley, Ike's offers a gastronomic adventure that would make any sandwich connoisseur's heart flutter.

Local favorites such as the 'Backstabber,' served on a French roll, never fail to impress.

The tangy artichoke hearts remarkably blend with the smooth Caesar dressing, creating an explosion of flavor.

But what truly sets Ike's apart is the amazing service.

Everyone there is so kind; they make you feel like you're part of the family.

If you're feeling adventurous, go for the 'Halsey.'

I cook Italian chicken regularly and was initially skeptical about this offering.

But trust me; it's worth every bite.

The well-thought-out combination of ingredients will leave your taste buds dancing with joy.

Of course, my love for Ike's goes beyond their listed menu.

If you're like me and enjoy experimenting with flavors, you're in luck.

Ike's offers the option to create your own sandwich.

Kin Izakaya

There is something very special about spending an evening at Kin Izakaya.

The place oozes vibrancy, with its lively atmosphere and friendly service turning an ordinary dinner into an unforgettable experience.

The food is as authentic as it gets, and there's a sense of anticipation that builds up as you wait for your order.

My friends and I usually order the skewers and noodles, a combination that never disappoints.

The skewers are delicious, especially the chicken skin and pork jowl, and the scallops are to die for.

As for noodles, their ramen offers a unique twist, their Tom Kha ramen, with its thick broth and unlimited noodle refills, is a must-try.

The Matcha Cloud is a particular favorite of mine.

It's light, and the foam has a yuzu flavor that is refreshing.

The Japanese Mule has a surprising hint of spice, and Ube Colada is a delight, though I would also warn that the Yuzu Fizz is on the sweeter side.

First Class Pizza

Every Friday night, our family has a tradition.

We load up the car and head to our favorite local spot, First Class Pizza, a gem tucked away in the heart of our city.

We've tried a lot of pizzas in the city, but nothing quite hits the spot like a pie from First Class.

The place has a long-running traditional vibe with a modern twist, providing build-your-own pizza options and even home delivery service.

However, we prefer to dine there.

The moment you step in, you're greeted by the mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked pizza dough, simmering tomato sauce, and melted cheese.

It’s a scrumptious delight that leaves us licking our fingers.

They always greet us with warm smiles and make us feel right at home.

My pick for the day was Pad Thai with tofu, a delightful dish that packed a punch of flavors and cost me only $13.10.

Although the serving may appear small at first glance, it was more than sufficient to leave me satiated.

Fu Wing Low Chinese Restaurant

I've always believed that the best food can be found in the most unassuming places, and Fu Wing Low certainly proves my point.

Walking past, you might not even give it a second glance, but let me assure you, this is one place you don't want to miss.

The quaint Chinese restaurant, tucked away in our bustling city, is renowned for its traditional Chinese dishes, served in a charming red-tablecloth setting.

The food at Fu Wing Low is unapologetically delicious, with the steamed fish being my personal favorite.

The melt-in-your-mouth fish, coupled with their exceptional service and timely manner, makes every dining experience a delight.

What strikes me most about this place is its simplicity.

The food is light, homey, not greasy, and far from being over-sauced.

The sweet and sour chicken there has no competition - it's probably the best I've ever tasted.

The intricate flavors and quality of the food, combined with hefty portion sizes, make every meal a satisfying one.

Fu Wing Low is a family-run restaurant, and you can feel the love they put into their food.

One of my go-to dishes is the house-special pan-fried noodles - the perfect balance of sauce, noodles, and meat is a testament to their culinary skills.
